The center, recognized for its excellence and collaboration, currently holds over $100 million in extramural funding for cancer-focused initiatives.

Los Angeles, CA – The University of Southern California (USC) has launched a search for a new Director of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, an institution recognized as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This significant role will be instrumental in further advancing cancer research and treatment strategies at one of the nation’s prestigious cancer institutions.

The USC Norris center has maintained a reputation for excellence, underscored by its recent achievement of an exceptional score and a rare seven-year merit extension during its latest Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) renewal. This highlights the center’s ongoing commitment to groundbreaking research and exemplary patient care.

USC Norris is distinguished by its collaborative ethos and a transdisciplinary approach, working towards addressing the varied cancer burdens prevalent in the diverse demographics of Los Angeles County. The center’s strong foundation is built upon five vibrant research programs and six highly rated shared resources, which enable interdisciplinary collaborations that enhance research productivity and innovation. Coupled with a robust infrastructure for clinical trials, the center has successfully engaged a multitude of diverse populations in its research initiatives.

Currently, faculty members associated with USC Norris collectively hold over $100 million in cancer-focused extramural funding, demonstrating the center’s significant contributions to cancer research, including substantial investments from the NCI. The center’s mission includes efforts to diminish cancer disparities and enhance patient outcomes through innovative translational research methods.

The new Director is expected to play a pivotal role in overseeing research programs, managing shared resources, and leading the clinical trials enterprise, while closely collaborating with the executive leadership of the Keck School of Medicine. The search is for a visionary physician-scientist or accomplished scientist who can demonstrate a successful track record in cancer research. The ideal candidate will inspire and engage a diverse community, ensuring that USC Norris remains at the forefront of cancer treatment and research.

Preparation for future CCSG renewals, including the next competitive submission due in 2028, will also be a key responsibility of the new Director. As a global research powerhouse and a top-ranked academic medical center, USC provides an environment rich in opportunities for academic and medical professionals.

The prospective salary for this high-level position is anticipated to range between $850,000 and $950,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additionally, relocation assistance will be provided, and USC offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, retirement plans, and paid time off.

To facilitate this significant search, USC has engaged the services of Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, which is actively screening applications for the position. Interested candidates are encouraged to send their CV and cover letter via the Isaacson, Miller website, as the application process is already in progress.

USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center’s ongoing commitment to cancer research and treatment necessitates strong leadership and innovative thinking. The selection of the next Director will be critical not only for the center’s future but also for the health and well-being of the communities they serve. The new leadership is expected to continue building on the institution’s traditions of excellence, further propelling its mission to advance cancer care in both Los Angeles and beyond.
