News Summary

President Donald Trump has embarked on a five-day visit to Scotland, blending diplomacy, business, and leisure. He will stay at his family’s golf resorts and engage in discussions with European leaders. While no public events are scheduled on Saturday, Trump’s meetings will focus on trade relations, particularly regarding a recent trade deal. Protests are anticipated, reflecting divided opinions among the Scottish populace about his presidency and business practices.

Glasgow, Scotland – President Donald Trump has begun a five-day visit to Scotland that combines elements of diplomacy, business, and leisure. His stay includes accommodations at his family-owned golf resorts: Trump Turnberry on the southwest coast and Trump International Golf Links near Balmedie in the northeast. Trump’s plane, Air Force One, landed at Prestwick Airport near Glasgow on Friday at 8:30 PM local time.

As part of the preparations for his arrival, police have initiated a significant security operation due to anticipated protests. Local authorities have deployed mounted police and additional officers around the resorts to manage any potential demonstrations. Crowds of Trump supporters were present at Prestwick Airport, welcoming the president upon his arrival.

No public events are scheduled for Trump on Saturday, as he is expected to spend the day playing golf at Turnberry. However, he plans to engage in critical discussions on Sunday with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding trade. Additionally, Trump is set to meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss ongoing trade relations, with a focus on a recent trade deal concluded in May.

While Trump has indicated that the bilateral trade deal is finalized, he remains noncommittal on the UK’s request to reduce steel and aluminum tariffs. He stated that he had exempted British exports from a blanket 50 percent tariff previously imposed but showed reluctance to make further concessions during his visit. The president may also address international concerns, including the situation in Gaza, during his meetings.

This trip is part of a more extensive diplomatic mission, with plans for another state visit to the UK in September, following an invitation from King Charles III. Trump’s ties to Scotland are personal; his mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, was born there, and he has spoken of a deep connection to the region.

Although some Scots demonstrate support for Trump, surveys indicate that over 70% of the populace disapproves of his presidency. Local residents and community leaders have expressed dissatisfaction with his previous promises related to job creation and environmental stewardship. Among his ongoing projects is the planned opening of an 18-hole golf course in Balmedie, which will be dedicated to his mother.

Activists have organized protests in major Scottish cities and at Trump’s golf resorts, reminiscent of similar demonstrations during his prior visits. There are growing concerns among local distillers about Trump’s potential influence on the whisky industry, especially regarding the imposition of 10 percent tariffs on exports to the U.S., Scotland’s largest market.

Trump has faced criticism for his past business dealings in Scotland, including allegations of bullying local residents for land acquisition. He is also under scrutiny for not fulfilling his investment commitments, having spent significantly less than initially promised. Furthermore, environmental disputes have marred his history, such as his unsuccessful opposition to wind farm installations near his resorts.

Local residents like Michael Forbes continue to resist Trump’s attempts to buy land and have openly voiced their frustrations regarding his business practices. As Trump navigates his visit amid a backdrop of protests and complex diplomatic relations, the impact of his presence remains a divisive topic among Scots.
