Secaucus, New Jersey

Dr. Ritesh Kalra, a 51-year-old Indian-origin physician, faces serious allegations of unlawful opioid prescribing and sexual exploitation of his patients. The charges stem from his actions while practicing medicine in Secaucus, New Jersey, where he is accused of exploiting his medical license to take advantage of individuals struggling with addiction.

Following a recent court hearing, Kalra has been placed under home detention with an unsecured bond set at $100,000. Due to the allegations against him, his medical license has been suspended. Prosecutors assert that Kalra issued over 31,000 prescriptions for oxycodone without legitimate medical justification from January 2019 to February 2025.

In addition to illegal drug distribution, Kalra is accused of soliciting sexual favors from female patients in exchange for opioid prescriptions. One allegation includes a disturbing account from a female patient who claimed that she was compelled to engage in anal sex during a medical visit. Another patient reported that Kalra prescribed opioids while she was incarcerated at the Essex County Correctional Facility, despite any direct communication between them during her confinement.

Kalra is also charged with health care fraud, which includes billing the state for so-called “ghost appointments,” indicating visits that did not happen. Court documents have revealed concerning details about his electronic medical records, showing fabricated progress notes that were identical across multiple patient files and lacked essential medical information, such as vital signs.

Kalra is facing a total of five federal charges, which include three counts for illegal drug distribution and two counts for health care fraud. Each count of illegal drug distribution carries a potential maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, while each health care fraud charge could result in up to 10 years in prison along with significant financial penalties.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have been victimized by Kalra or who possesses information relevant to the case to come forward and contact the FBI. Investigations into Kalra’s conduct have raised alarming questions regarding the responsibilities held by medical professionals.

The allegations against Kalra underscore a critical issue within the health care community regarding the ethical practices of physicians. Attorney Alina Habba commented on the gravity of Kalra’s alleged actions, emphasizing that physicians are entrusted with significant responsibilities toward their patients. The exploitation of vulnerable individuals for personal gain, particularly in an area as sensitive as addiction treatment, raises serious concerns about patient safety and trust in medical practitioners.

The ongoing investigation serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance in the medical community regarding prescription practices and the safeguarding of patient rights. As the case develops, many are watching closely for its implications not only for the accused but also for the broader healthcare system in New Jersey and beyond.
