The stunning Greywalls Hotel, a historic site next to Muirfield golf course, known for its scenic views and gardens.
Marine & Lawn Hotels and Resorts has acquired the historic Greywalls Hotel near Muirfield golf course in Scotland, expanding its portfolio to eight properties. The hotel, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, offers exclusive golf access and features gardens by Gertrude Jekyll. In addition, the company is also expanding into North Carolina with two historic properties. This growth reflects Marine & Lawn’s commitment to providing luxury experiences in premier golfing destinations.
Edinburgh, Scotland – Marine & Lawn Hotels and Resorts, a subsidiary of AJ Capital Partners, has announced the acquisition of the historic Greywalls Hotel, located adjacent to the world-renowned Muirfield golf course in Scotland. This new addition brings the total number of properties in Marine & Lawn’s portfolio to eight globally, as the company continues its expansion into prestigious golf locales.
The Greywalls Hotel, an Edwardian estate that was designed by the prominent architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1901, has a storied history, serving as a retreat for both royalty and golf aficionados. The hotel is recognized for its beautifully curated gardens, which were designed by the famous horticulturist Gertrude Jekyll. It has been privately owned by the Weaver family since 1926, adding to its unique legacy.
Situated behind the 10th tee box of Muirfield, the acquisition allows Greywalls Hotel guests exclusive access to the prestigious golf course, which has hosted the Open Championship a remarkable sixteen times and is consistently ranked among the top 10 golf courses in the world by Golf Digest. This strategic positioning aims to enhance the guest experience for those seeking premier golfing opportunities.
In addition to the Greywalls Hotel, Marine & Lawn is also expanding its footprint into the United States with the acquisition of Mid Pines Inn and Pine Needles Lodge, both located in Southern Pines, North Carolina. These two U.S. properties, dating back to the 1920s, are situated along Donald Ross-designed golf courses, reinforcing the company’s commitment to historic golf experiences.
Both Mid Pines Inn and Pine Needles Lodge will undergo substantial renovations, which will include updates to guest rooms, dining options, and common areas to enhance the overall guest experience. Future guests at these U.S. properties will benefit from priority access and specially curated golf packages, promising a blend of luxury and premier golfing experiences.
The expansions at Greywalls Hotel and the North Carolina properties align with Marine & Lawn’s vision of providing world-class hospitality at historic golfing destinations. Since its launch in 2019, the brand has actively sought to connect golfers with iconic locales, elevating travel experiences through local partnerships and immersive cultural experiences. This approach not only enhances guest engagement but also positions Marine & Lawn as a leader in the golf tourism sector.
Company officials have indicated that future growth may include additional properties in England and Ireland, further solidifying Marine & Lawn’s presence in historic golf regions. This ongoing expansion reflects a broader strategy to create bespoke golf tourism experiences, including unique offerings such as The Grand Tour Experience, which is expected to cater to the upscale golf market.
The acquisition of Greywalls Hotel and the expansion into North Carolina are seen as significant milestones for Marine & Lawn, as they continue their efforts to foster distinguished hospitality grounded in historic golfing traditions. With plans for upgrades and a commitment to enriching the guest experience, Marine & Lawn aims to solidify its standing in the competitive golf tourism landscape.
