Additionally, LAUSD is distributing resources and adapting bus routes to ensure students’ safety while accessing education. Meanwhile, health services are being enhanced, highlighting the community’s commitment to a secure learning environment.
Los Angeles—As the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) prepares to welcome approximately 400,000 students back to school on Thursday, August 14, officials are taking significant steps to ensure the safety and security of families amid rising concerns about immigration enforcement. The district operates over 1,500 schools and recognizes the heightened anxiety many families are experiencing during this back-to-school season.
The LAUSD is urging parents to verify their child’s registration and update emergency card information before the first day of school. In response to concerns regarding immigration enforcement, the district is facilitating emergency communication and providing support for all students, regardless of their immigration status. This initiative includes over 4,500 calls made to families to address and reassure them about their immigration status concerns.
In an effort to maintain safe passage for students, school police and volunteers will establish protective perimeters around at least 100 schools starting on the first day of classes. Safe passage zones have been expanded from 40 to over 100 locations throughout the district. Furthermore, LAUSD is collaborating with local mayors, including Mayor Karen Bass, to minimize federal immigration operations near schools, ensuring students can travel safely to and from their educational institutions.
To aid families, LAUSD is distributing family preparedness packets containing information about rights and available resources. Additionally, a compassion fund has been implemented to assist families, including access to legal support. In light of a recent incident where a student was mistakenly detained by immigration agents at Arleta High School, LAUSD officials have condemned the actions of federal agents and reiterated their commitment to safeguarding vulnerable students as the new school year begins.
The district is also adapting bus routes to reduce students’ exposure to immigration enforcement while en route to school. LAUSD has significantly increased its fleet of electric buses to 180 vehicles, all equipped with WiFi and GPS technology, allowing parents to track their children in real-time. Officials confirmed that immigration agents are not allowed to board school buses unless they possess a valid judicial warrant—an occurrence that is notably rare.
As part of its ongoing support for students’ health and well-being, UMMA Health has launched a school-based site at the Locke Wellness Center in South Los Angeles, offering expanded medical and dental services to ensure that students have access to necessary healthcare.
In addition to these initiatives, nonprofits, city governments, and churches are organizing back-to-school drives to secure essential school supplies for students, reinforcing the community’s commitment to supporting families as they return to school. Superintendent Carvalho has scheduled a live social media Q&A for August 13 from 10 to 11 a.m., providing families with an opportunity to ask questions regarding the upcoming school year and the district’s measures to fortify student safety.
As the LAUSD community readies itself for the new school year, the district remains focused on fostering an environment where all families feel secure in their children’s education. With robust safety strategies and an emphasis on immigrant support, LAUSD is committed to ensuring that every student can learn in a protected and nurturing atmosphere.
