Lake Tahoe, CA – CalTrans has announced upcoming lane closures and construction projects in the Lake Tahoe region next week, which will affect traffic flow and accessibility in key areas.

The ongoing $31.7 million pavement rehabilitation project along State Route 28 (SR 28) in Tahoe City is set to cause significant disruptions. Work will begin at 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, and continue until 7 a.m. each night through Thursday, August 28. The construction zone stretches between Commons Beach Road and Grove Street, primarily impacting westbound traffic. Bi-directional traffic implementation will be used to alleviate some congestion during the project.

During this work, no street parking will be permitted in the construction zone; however, access to local cross streets and driveways will remain available to residents and businesses. In addition, extra construction work is scheduled for Friday, August 29, from 7 a.m. until noon, which may add to the overall disruptions in the area.

Utility work will also take place during this timeframe, with planned operations from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, August 25, and Tuesday, August 26, between Star Harbor Court and Lake Forest Road (west). This work aims to enhance local infrastructure and support the ongoing rehabilitation efforts.

In a related project, the Fanny Bridge in Tahoe City will be closed to all traffic until Saturday, November 15. Detours will redirect vehicles to Lake Boulevard for access to State Route 89 (SR 89) and SR 28 while the bridge is closed. Notably, despite the Fanny Bridge closure, West Lake Boulevard remains open for business and transit center access. The pedestrian and bicycle path across the Truckee River Dam will also remain open throughout this construction phase.

Residents and visitors should also prepare for increased noise and vibrations due to pile driving activities scheduled for Saturday, August 23, and Sunday, August 24, as part of the ongoing construction work in the area.

Furthermore, from Monday, August 25, through Thursday, August 28, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., broadband utility work will take place along SR 28, stretching between the State Route 267 junction in Kings Beach and the Nevada state line. This is part of an initiative to improve digital connectivity in the region.

In addition, overnight utility work is scheduled on Sunday, August 24, from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Monday, August 25, between Park Lane and Harbor Avenue in Brockway. Similarly, utility work along SR 89 in Placer County will occur from Monday, August 25, through Thursday, August 28, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., between South Street and Fern Street in the Homewood area.

Motorists are urged to plan ahead and seek alternative routes where necessary, as the construction and utility work schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment availability, or unforeseen circumstances. Commuters are encouraged to exercise patience and allow for extra travel time as these essential improvements are carried out in the Lake Tahoe region.
