News Summary

Puerto Rico has introduced ‘The Green Path,’ an initiative promoting responsible tourism and sustainability within its vibrant tourism sector. The program focuses on eco-friendly practices, enabling tourists to support local businesses and protect the island’s culture and environment. Certification through educational modules unlocks exclusive travel perks for participants while promoting lesser-known attractions to distribute tourism benefits evenly across the island. This initiative reflects Puerto Rico’s commitment to sustainable travel and enhancing the experiences of visitors.

San Juan, Puerto Rico – Puerto Rico has officially launched “The Green Path,” an initiative designed to foster responsible tourism and enhance sustainability within the island’s vibrant tourism sector. The program aims to protect the rich culture and unique environment of Puerto Rico while encouraging visitors to adopt eco-friendly practices during their stay.

Incorporating local experiences, “The Green Path” offers a series of eco-friendly practices that enable tourists to support local businesses and contribute to a sustainable future. Travelers can achieve certification by completing four educational modules available on the program’s dedicated microsite. This certification unlocks exclusive travel perks, showcasing the participants’ commitment to the conservation of Puerto Rico’s natural heritage and cultural identity.

Puerto Rico is known for its incredible biodiversity, featuring breathtaking locations such as the El Yunque Rainforest and its famous bioluminescent bays. The initiative articulates a vision to not only preserve these natural wonders but also to promote the island’s rich cultural offerings. The program extends beyond environmental conservation, including tailored resources for gatherings under the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) segment, encouraging responsible event planning that aligns with the principles of sustainability.

Several renowned golf courses across the island are adopting sustainable best practices in line with “The Green Path.” Notable courses, including Fort Buchanan Golf Club, St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort and Golf Club, and Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Rainforest Golf & Beach Resort, have joined “Monarchs in the Rough,” a conservation program by Audubon International. These courses are dedicated to creating ecological sanctuaries that support the monarch butterfly population. Furthermore, Bahia Beach golf course and resort have received independent certification from Audubon International for their remarkable sustainability efforts.

Agrotourism is gaining momentum in Puerto Rico, with local farmers leading the way by showcasing their isolated farms and sustainable agricultural practices. This movement offers tourists engaging opportunities to experience authentic aspects of Puerto Rican culture beyond traditional tourist spots. The island’s local farmers are pivotal in providing these novel experiences, connecting visitors with the heart of the island’s agricultural landscape.

The rise of ecotourism coincides with an increasing global demand for sustainable travel options, pushing the Puerto Rican government and local tourism boards to promote lesser-known areas. This strategy aims to alleviate overcrowding in popular tourist hubs like San Juan, ensuring that the economic benefits of tourism are distributed more evenly across the island. The Green Path is positioned as a solution to encourage exploration of off-the-beaten-path regions, ultimately benefiting local communities economically.

In recent data, Puerto Rico’s lodging revenue reached an impressive $1.95 billion in 2024, indicating a robust tourism economy. As part of the initiative, “The Green Path” seeks to enhance this growth through a combination of immersive education, storytelling, and interactive content designed to inspire responsible travel practices amongst visitors.

Upon completing the initiative’s educational modules, users will receive a badge certifying them as “Responsible Travelers to Visit Puerto Rico.” This badge not only acknowledges their participation but also grants access to various exclusive discounts and offers that further enrich their travel experience.

Puerto Rico’s commitment to sustainable tourism through “The Green Path” reflects a broader trend towards environmentally conscious travel, maintaining the island’s natural beauty and cultural integrity while providing visitors with meaningful experiences.
