La Quinta, California – NFL Hall of Famer John Elway has been cleared of any criminal charges following a tragic golf cart accident that resulted in the death of his friend and business partner, Jeff Sperbeck. The incident occurred on April 26 at The Madison Club, a golf resort in southern California, when Sperbeck fell from the back of the moving golf cart and sustained fatal injuries.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, thorough investigations found no evidence of criminal activity or intent related to the accident. The county coroner’s report ruled the manner of death an accident, confirming that Sperbeck, 62, died from blunt force trauma.
On the day of the accident, Elway was driving the golf cart as they were leaving a post-event party after attending a music festival. A 911 call made by Elway revealed that Sperbeck had fallen off the cart after standing on the back while it was in motion. During the call, Elway identified himself, informing the dispatcher that his friend had fallen without indicating that the cart had hit anything.
Paramedics were dispatched immediately, and a medic arrived shortly thereafter to provide assistance. Despite attempts to save him, Sperbeck succumbed to his injuries soon after the incident.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco stated that the investigation into the accident has been completed and affirmed that there was “nothing criminal” about the case. Following the incident, Elway expressed profound sadness regarding the loss of his close friend in a public statement, highlighting the emotional toll the event had on him.
Elway and Sperbeck shared a long-standing professional relationship, with Sperbeck managing Elway’s business interests since 1990. Additionally, he represented more than 100 NFL players during his three-decade-long career as an agent.
