Brainerd, Minnesota – Cragun’s Resort, Golf and Conference has announced the completion of a multi-year renovation of its golf course, highlighted by the official unveiling of the last nine holes, now named Dutch Red. Renowned PGA TOUR Champions player and course architect Tom Lehman led the ceremonial event, marking a significant milestone for the resort, which has been a prominent destination for golfers and tourists since 1940.
All 45 holes at the resort are now open for play, catering to both resort guests and the public. The renovation focuses on enhancing playability and enjoyment for golfers of varying skill levels. Among the improvements made are new bunkering designs, redesigned greens, and updated green surrounds. While the overall routing of the course has remained unchanged, the project included substantial reshaping and clearing efforts that have opened up scenic views throughout the landscape.
Significant alterations were made to critical holes, particularly #3 and #4. The third hole features nearly double the fairway landing area, with the green strategically pushed back by 50 yards, accompanied by a soft chipping area to aid players. The fourth hole has now transformed into a drivable par 4, with relocated bunkers and cart path adjustments intended to enhance the playable experience.
The grand opening event welcomed various attendees, including representatives from the resort’s new owners, Leisure Hotels & Resorts, which recently completed the largest resort acquisition in Minnesota’s history with the purchase. The completion of the renovation signals the beginning of an exciting new era for golfing in the Upper Midwest.
In addition to the renovation announcements, Cragun’s Resort is set to host the CRMC Championship from August 28-31, showcasing the revitalized layouts of the Red and White courses. The CRMC Championship has seen past champions including Jake Knapp (2022), Yi Cao (2023), and Frederik Kjettrup (2024), further solidifying the resort’s importance in the competitive golf arena.
Cragun’s Resort has been a cherished part of the Brainerd Lakes community, drawing thousands of visitors annually. The recent ownership transfer to Baxter-based Leisure Hotels & Resorts does not entail any changes to the existing staff and leadership team, ensuring consistency in operations while preserving the resort’s rich legacy and history.
The new owners have committed to further enhance the facility over the next two years, planning additional investments to elevate guest experiences and broaden service offerings. Cragun’s Resort features 206 lodge-style rooms, 55 cabins, and seven homes, in addition to multiple dining venues and extensive golf courses operated by over 400 employees. It also includes significant meeting space, positioning it as a prime location for events and conferences.
Originally a family-run operation that began with humble roots, Cragun’s Resort has grown into one of Minnesota’s largest resorts under the stewardship of the Cragun family. The resort underwent substantial renovations in 2015, costing approximately $25 million, further establishing its reputation as a premier destination for leisure and recreation. With the recent renovations now complete, Cragun’s Resort stands poised to enhance its offerings and cultivate an unforgettable experience for all who visit.
