Greenwich, CT – A construction worker tragically lost his life early Saturday morning after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 95. Traymont Tucker, 38, of Waterbury, was working in a construction zone on I-95 North near exit 3 when the incident happened at approximately 2:24 a.m.
The area where Tucker was working had been marked for active construction, with the left lane of the three travel lanes closed to traffic. Despite these precautions, Osvaldo Vela, a 38-year-old driver from Yonkers, N.Y., veered into the construction zone and collided with Tucker. Emergency medical personnel from Greenwich pronounced Tucker dead at the scene around 2:55 a.m.
In the aftermath of the accident, Vela sustained minor injuries and was taken to Stamford Hospital for treatment. The vehicle involved in the incident was subsequently towed from the scene.
I-95 North was shut down while authorities conducted an investigation, reopening just before 10 a.m. on the same day. As of early Saturday afternoon, investigators had not filed any charges and were continuing to look into the circumstances surrounding the tragic collision. Authorities are urging anyone with pertinent information about the accident to reach out to Troop G at 203-696-2500 or contact Trooper George Lyman via email.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation expressed its condolences to Tanner’s family, noting the significance of road safety, especially in marked construction zones. Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto underscored the dangers that highway work presents, urging the public to adhere to the Slow Down, Move Over law as a crucial safety measure for protecting construction workers on the job.
This incident has brought renewed attention to the safety challenges faced by construction workers on busy highways. Previous reports have highlighted that construction zones often pose significant risks, not only to workers but also to motorists who may unintentionally encroach upon these areas.
Authorities are committed to raising awareness about the safety regulations designed to protect those working on roadways. They emphasize the importance of vigilance for all drivers, reinforcing the message that compliance with established safety laws can save lives.
As the investigation continues into Tucker’s tragic death, the community mourns the loss of a dedicated worker. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the perils associated with highway construction and the need for ongoing efforts to improve safety for all individuals on the road.
