Malibu, California – A police chase involving a carjacking suspect who stole a vehicle with three children inside ended in a violent crash on Friday evening. The incident began when the children’s parent left their car running at a 7-Eleven in East Los Angeles, allowing the suspect, whose identity remains unknown, to enter and drive off with the vehicle while the children were still inside.

The authorities were notified about the car theft at approximately 6:38 p.m., prompting the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to initiate a pursuit of the suspect soon after. The chase unfolded across Los Angeles as the suspect careened onto the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), endangering the lives of the young passengers, all reported to be under the age of 10, one of whom is just 2 years old.

Due to the presence of the young children, law enforcement decided against employing a pit maneuver to stop the vehicle, prioritizing the minors’ safety. At one interval during the chase, deputies deployed a spike strip in an attempt to disable the vehicle, but the suspect managed to evade its impact briefly before striking it and subsequently accelerating with reckless speed.

The pursuit, which lasted approximately an hour, culminated around 7:35 p.m. at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Kanan Dume Road. The suspect ran a red light before colliding with another vehicle, resulting in a multi-vehicle crash that prompted witnesses to describe the scene as chaotic and alarming. Witnesses reported hearing the collision’s loud impact and fearing further accidents.

Post-collision, the suspect fled the scene on foot, sprinting into a field and over a barbed-wire fence. Emergency responders quickly arrived to assist the three children, who were still conscious and breathing, and removed them from the vehicle. The children were subsequently airlifted to a hospital with varying degrees of injuries; the oldest child suffered a small concussion, the middle child sustained a dislocated hip, and the youngest child experienced minor bruises.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash, an older woman, was also hospitalized, though details about her condition remain undisclosed. It was noted that the father of the children had attempted to intervene during the carjacking and sustained injuries to his upper body when he was dragged by the suspect’s vehicle.

Further complicating the situation, shortly after fleeing the crash, the suspect attempted to carjack another vehicle but was unsuccessful. However, authorities apprehended the suspect in a nearby neighborhood at approximately 7:50 p.m. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The family of the children expressed a mix of relief concerning their recovery and trauma from the incident, disrupting their holiday weekend. Due to the medical expenses incurred from the children’s treatment, the family has set up a GoFundMe page to aid in covering these costs.

As for the case itself, formal charges against the suspect are pending, and no further details regarding their identity have been released. This troubling incident highlights the ongoing issue of carjackings and the potential dangers posed to innocent passengers, especially vulnerable young children.
