Eighteen California colleges have achieved five-star recognition in Money’s Best Colleges in America ranking, showcasing the state’s dedication to quality education. Key contributors include the California State University system, where all campuses received ratings of four stars or higher, and the University of California system, with five campuses earning similar accolades. This report highlights graduation rates, affordability, and support for diverse student populations, emphasizing California’s commitment to accessible and high-quality higher education.

Los Angeles – Eighteen California colleges have achieved recognition as five-star institutions in Money’s 2025 Best Colleges in America ranking, highlighting the state’s commitment to high-quality education. This prestigious report assessed 732 colleges based on 25 criteria including quality of education, affordability, and student outcomes.

The California State University (CSU) system, the largest four-year public university system in the nation, was a significant contributor to this accolade. All 22 CSU campuses received a rating of four stars or higher, with 15 universities placing in the top 10% nationwide and nine attaining a five-star status. The affordability of the CSU system is notable, with undergraduate tuition averaging under $7,000 per year, which ranks among the lowest in the country. Additionally, over 80% of CSU students receive some form of financial aid, and more than half of graduates emerge with no student loan debt.

Chancellor of CSU highlighted the system’s ability to serve a diverse student population, which exceeds 460,000 across various socioeconomic backgrounds. The recognition reflects a commitment to providing accessible education and robust support for student success.

The University of California (UC) system also performed well, with five campuses earning five-star ratings. UC Berkeley was among the 14 UC and CSU campuses to be recognized for excellence among U.S. public universities.

In contrast, the California Institute of the Arts received the lowest rating among California colleges, scoring only two stars. Meanwhile, Stanford University was recognized as one of the nation’s most selective universities, with an acceptance rate of just 3.9% in 2023, and a matriculation rate of 80.9%, reflecting the institution’s competitive nature. Harvard University was identified as the most selective school in America.

Stanford’s campus has been recognized for its beauty, being named the most beautiful college campus by Travel + Leisure, with the University of San Diego ranking sixth for campus aesthetics. These distinctions enhance the appeal of California’s educational institutions.

California’s commitment to education extends to its community colleges, which provide strong two-year and trade programs that facilitate transitions to four-year universities. Initiatives such as the California Promise program and the Transfer Admission Guarantee for UC schools support affordability and access for transfer students, ensuring a streamlined path to achieving higher education goals.

The report emphasizes the value offered by California public colleges, particularly regarding graduation rates, student debt, and alumni earnings, illustrating the positive outcomes of higher education in the state. The CSU and UC systems are actively working on initiatives aimed at improving student success and graduation rates. Notably, the CSU system’s Graduation Initiative 2025 aims to increase completion rates and address equity gaps among various student groups.

To support these efforts, ongoing strategies include enhancing data collection to facilitate student advising and monitoring outcomes for graduates. California State University Monterey Bay was assessed with a score of 4.5 stars, recognized for its commitment to making education accessible and enhancing social mobility.

In a bid to further improve the educational experience, CSU has announced funding for 63 innovative AI projects designed to enhance teaching methods and address concerns surrounding AI adoption in academia. These developments underline California’s ongoing dedication to providing quality higher education and fostering success among its diverse student populations.
