Local businesses like Cantafio’s Buckhorn Supper Club are set to remain operational amidst the ongoing development. This change comes as farmland owners have reportedly received approximately $20,000 or more per acre for their properties, facilitating the transition to a facility intended to support AI and cloud computing technologies.
The development is expected to have significant economic implications for Beaver Dam, particularly in light of recent growth spurred by Generac Power Systems, which opened a 350,000 square-foot factory in the area, shifting manufacturing operations from other states and Mexico. This factory currently contributes to the local economy and showcases increasing industrial interest in Beaver Dam.
As data centers play a crucial role in modern life by enabling functionalities like social media, streaming services, and online banking, this new facility aims to enhance local digital infrastructure in line with similar projects across Wisconsin, including a $3.3 billion Microsoft data center project in Mount Pleasant.
Reports suggest that the prospective data center may be developed by Meta, the parent company of Facebook, at an estimated cost of nearly $1 billion. Although these facilities typically generate only a couple dozen permanent jobs in data technology, the construction phase could provide temporary employment to thousands, bolstering the local job market.
The data center is projected to utilize up to 300,000 gallons of municipal water daily, an amount comparable to the water needs of food processing plants. This high consumption has raised concerns among community leaders regarding the impact on local resources, notably the power grid and water supply. Residents have expressed mixed feelings about the development; some are anxious about the potential loss of rural landscapes and the effects on their quality of life.
In addition, Harmony Baptist Church, which is in proximity to the development, has chosen to remain in its current location despite offers to sell to the developer. Local sentiment reflects apprehension towards the increasing encroachment of urban development into rural territories, as voiced by residents like Eric Schoenberg.
City officials have indicated that agreements are in place to protect taxpayer interests should the data center project not move forward as planned.
