Twin Cities, Minnesota
Two construction workers lost their lives in separate incidents on Twin Cities highways within a span of 48 hours, highlighting the dangers faced by individuals working in construction zones.
The most recent tragedy occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on Thursday on eastbound Highway 610 near the interchange with Interstate 94 in Maple Grove, Minnesota. A contract worker named Adam Frederick Smith, aged 25 and hailing from Seymour, Wisconsin, was on foot in a closed construction zone when he was struck by a dump truck that was reversing. Emergency responders arrived at the scene but unfortunately declared Smith dead upon their arrival.
The driver of the dump truck involved in the accident was identified as Dianand Sukhram, 57, from Port Charlotte, Florida. Sukhram did not sustain any injuries during the incident but has a documented history of driving violations, which includes inspection decal violations and driving without proof of insurance.
The construction operations where the accident took place were being managed by New Look Contracting, a company based in Rogers, Minnesota. Following Smith’s tragic accident, the eastbound lanes of Highway 610 between I-94 and Maple Grove Parkway were temporarily closed until around 6 p.m. the same day to conduct investigations and clear the area.
Just a day earlier, another construction worker met a similar fate. On Wednesday morning, Pierre Raymon Mack, 29, from St. Paul, was killed while working in a construction zone on southbound Interstate 35W near Highway 13. Reports indicate that Mack was on foot in a closed construction area when he was struck by a truck equipped with a boom attachment. Emergency responders also confirmed that Mack was not near any passing vehicles at the time of the incident.
The driver involved in Mack’s accident was identified as Kerry Don Ingram, 50, from North Branch, Minnesota. Ingram also emerged from the incident without injuries. In a separate but related incident, another truck driver clipped a stopped Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) truck shortly after Mack’s accident, resulting in a citation for hit-and-run and other violations against that driver. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from that incident.
The frequency of such accidents raises concerns about safety in construction zones. According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the agency has reported that since 1960, a total of 36 MnDOT workers and 16 contractors have lost their lives while performing their duties on Minnesota highways, underscoring the inherent risks associated with this line of work.
As investigations continue into these recent accidents, safety advocates urge for heightened awareness and stricter enforcement of safety regulations to protect workers in these potentially hazardous environments. The loss of Adam Smith and Pierre Mack serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by construction workers and the pressing need for improved safety measures in work zones throughout the state.
