Rainfall improved fishing conditions but raised fire hazards due to dry conditions. Anglers at Woodhull Lake enjoyed good catches, while conservation works included the rescue and rehabilitation of a Loon. The Old Forge Garden Club held a successful plant sale despite weather challenges, and the ’90-Miler’ Adirondack Canoe Classic faced typical endurance race difficulties. Overall, the weekend highlighted community engagement and commitment to the region’s natural habitat.

Old Forge, New York – Successful fishing experiences and concerted conservation efforts marked the Labor Day holiday weekend in the Adirondacks. The region received much-needed rainfall over the weekend, bolstering fishing conditions and addressing concerns over potential fire hazards in the area.

On Thursday, September 4, the area experienced thunderstorms that delivered approximately one inch of rainfall, followed by an additional half-inch of light rain on Saturday, September 6. Although the rain fell steadily, most of it was absorbed by the forest floor, leaving a local pond about a foot low in water levels. This slight reduction in water also resulted in the absence of migrating shorebirds typically attracted to the pond’s edge, which was devoid of waterfowl commonly seen under similar conditions.

Fishing at Woodhull Lake turned out to be productive for enthusiasts. Local residents, including one enthusiastic angler and his grandson, reported a successful outing as they caught bass hidden among the sunken stumps that were previously submerged. With water levels low enough to expose three feet of the stumps, anglers were able to target the fish effectively.

Despite the rain, the dry conditions that preceded the weekend raised alarms regarding surface fire potential in nearby woodlands. Heavy leaf drop due to the preceding drought increased the likelihood of wildfires, prompting an advisory for campers to clear combustible materials from campfire areas.

One significant fire incident in the Moose River Area highlighted the need for caution. Campers inadvertently started a fire on dry duff, which then spread to approximately three acres despite immediate firefighting efforts. Forest Rangers responded with portable pumps flown in by helicopter to assist in extinguishing the flames. At one point during this incident, a thunderstorm provided nearly two inches of rain, albeit too late to fully suppress the fire. It mainly burned underground, necessitating a coordinated response led by Forest Ranger Jerry Husson, who directed the creation of a fire line using bulldozing equipment.

In an unrelated wildlife conservation effort, a Loon was rescued from a construction parking area south of Boonville. After being successfully rehabilitated at the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation, the bird was banded and subsequently released back into the environment following veterinary examinations.

In addition to these events, the Old Forge Garden Club held its annual plant sale at the Old Forge Library on Saturday, September 6. Despite inclement weather, the sale featured over 200 flowering plants and was characterized as the club’s most successful outing to date. Club member Tara Potempa donned a flower lady costume to draw in customers, resulting in significant interest and sales. Many plants for sale were deer-resistant and are expected to thrive in local gardens come summer.

Meanwhile, the “90-Miler” Adirondack Canoe Classic event proceeded smoothly, though participants faced some challenges typical of such endurance races. The event attracts competitors from across the region and provides a platform to celebrate the natural beauty and recreational opportunities presented by the Adirondacks.

As a final note, the author, who has a rich history of service as a Forest Ranger for over 35 years, ties these events into a broader commitment to wildlife conservation efforts and the preservation of the Adirondack ecosystem. The weekend’s occurrences illustrate the interconnections between recreational enjoyment and stewardship responsibilities in this treasured region.
