Los Angeles school being prepared for reopening after wildfires

News Summary

The Los Angeles Unified School District plans to reopen schools after closures due to wildfires. While most schools will resume, some remain closed indefinitely due to evacuation zones. Palisades Charter Elementary has been destroyed, and students will be relocated, while precautions for air quality and safety are being implemented across the district, including the use of air purifiers and KN-95 masks. Reconstruction plans are underway for damaged schools, and mental health resources are being offered to assist families.

Los Angeles – The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is preparing to reopen on Monday after being closed since Thursday due to wildfires affecting the region. Over half of the approximately 700,000 students impacted by school closures belong to LAUSD, which has been working diligently to address the challenges posed by these fires.

Superintendent Alberto Carvalho confirmed that the decision to reopen was based on reported improvements in fire containment and air quality conditions. However, certain schools located within mandatory evacuation zones, such as Palisades Charter Elementary and Marquez Charter Elementary, will remain closed indefinitely.

In an unfortunate turn of events, Palisades Charter Elementary School was entirely destroyed by the Palisades Fire, displacing its 410 students who will be relocated to Brentwood Science Magnet for the remainder of the school year. Similarly, Marquez Charter Elementary, which lost its building, will see its 312 students moved to Nora Sterry Elementary School.

Another school affected by the flames is Palisades Charter High School, which sustained significant damage and has postponed the start of its classes until January 21. To support the reopening process, about 3,000 employees have been mobilized over the weekend to prepare the schools, ensuring facilities are in a favorable condition for students and staff.

To promote safety upon reopening, LAUSD has implemented precautionary measures. These include limiting outdoor activities for students and providing KN-95 masks to all students and faculty members. Furthermore, the district will deploy around 3,000 standalone air purifiers to campuses that continue to experience poor air quality from the fires.

In terms of compliance and safety, while California law does not impose specific maintenance requirements following fire incidents, guidelines suggest performing thorough cleaning and replacing air filters to ensure a healthy environment for students.

In a related situation, the Pasadena Unified School District reopened on the same day, accommodating students who lost their homes due to the recent Eaton Fire. At Altadena Arts Magnet School, students have temporarily relocated to Allendale Elementary, with nearly half of those students comprising families impacted by the fire.

In response to the destructive impact of the fires, LAUSD board members have approved reconstruction plans for both Marquez Charter Elementary and Palisades Charter High School, which faced approximately 75% damage. The estimated costs for these rebuilding efforts exceed $604 million, with plans in place to seek federal reimbursement through FEMA to help alleviate financial burdens.

The district aims to minimize delays in the rebuilding process, as disruptions in the flow of essential resources could impede recovery efforts. The significance of these developments is magnified by the fact that other schools across Los Angeles County have faced closures, creating considerable challenges for students and their families during this tumultuous time.

In acknowledgment of the difficulties many families are experiencing, the district is also providing mental health resources and food distribution services to assist those affected by the fires. These initiatives are intended to offer support as the community moves forward in the recovery and rebuilding phases following this disaster.
