Modern pistachio processing facility in Zamora, California

News Summary

Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. has opened a new 430,000 square-foot processing facility in Zamora, California, to meet rising demand for pistachios. Opened on June 5, 2023, the facility is anticipated to play a crucial role in supporting the record pistachio harvest expected in 2025. The new location aims to lower transportation costs for growers and enhance Setton’s processing capabilities, which have been bolstered by recent acquisitions and expansions. This development highlights the growing interest in plant-based snacks and sustainable farming practices.

California – Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc., a leading pistachio grower and processor in the United States, has inaugurated a new processing facility in Zamora, Yolo County, as part of an ambitious expansion to bolster its processing capabilities in response to surging demand for pistachios. This new 430,000 square-foot plant, with 270,000 square feet already operational, is expected to play a significant role in accommodating the anticipated record-breaking pistachio harvest in 2025.

The grand opening of the Zamora facility took place on June 5, 2023, and was attended by various stakeholders, including growers, vendors, and state representatives. The strategic location of the plant is anticipated to significantly reduce travel times and transportation costs for grower partners in Northern California, where approximately 14,000 acres are dedicated to pistachio cultivation across multiple counties, including Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Placer, Sacramento, and Yolo.

Setton’s new facility marks a significant chapter in the company’s efforts to meet the rising consumer interest in plant-based snacks and promote sustainable farming practices. The company has been proactive in enhancing its processing capabilities by recently acquiring Deer Creek Pistachio, a processing facility in Terra Bella. This acquisition has further expanded Setton’s capacity for hulling, drying, and processing pistachios, augmenting the services they can provide to their grower partners.

In addition to the new plant in Zamora, Setton operates a total of five processing facilities, which include two in Terra Bella, one in Pixley, one in Ducor, and now the newly opened site in Zamora. With the expansions at the Brooklyn facility in Terra Bella also contributing to these developments, Setton’s overall processing capabilities have increased significantly, adding more than 100 million pounds of additional processing volume to their operations, with future growth plans already on the horizon.

Setton Farms Chief Operating Officer Mia Cohen has stated that the expansion efforts are motivated by the growing trends in the pistachio industry, highlighting the increased public interest in healthy, plant-based snacks. Through these enhancements, Setton aims to maintain its commitment to both supporting growers and fostering environmentally sustainable practices.

This new processing facility is part of a broader trend within the pistachio industry aimed at capitalizing on the growing market for healthy snack options, making it a pivotal development for both Setton and the region’s agricultural community. As the industry continues to expand, Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. is well-positioned to meet future challenges and demands while reinforcing its status as the country’s second-largest pistachio grower and processor.
